Passkeys Explained: A Safer and Simpler Way to Sign In

Why passwords are no longer enough

Passwords are familiar, but they introduce several everyday problems. People reuse them, forget them, or accidentally type them into fake websites. Even a strong password can be exposed when a service suffers a data breach. Passkeys offer a different approach: instead of memorizing a secret, you approve a sign-in using a trusted device.

What is a passkey?

A passkey is a digital sign-in credential based on public-key cryptography. When you create one, your device or passkey provider manages a private key, while the website stores a corresponding public key. The private key is not sent to the website. During sign-in, the service sends a challenge, and your device uses its key to prove that the request is legitimate.

Why passkeys can resist phishing

A passkey is associated with the genuine website or app. This binding helps prevent an impostor website from using the credential, even if its login page looks convincing. That is a major advantage over passwords and one-time codes, which people can be tricked into entering on fraudulent pages. Passkeys do not eliminate every account-security risk, however: device security and account-recovery settings still matter.

Do you have to use your fingerprint?

Not necessarily. Many devices let you approve a passkey with a fingerprint, face recognition, screen-lock PIN, or another local verification method. The biometric data, when used, stays under the device’s control rather than being handed to each website. Depending on your provider, passkeys can synchronize across devices or be stored on a physical security key.

How to start using passkeys

Open the security settings of an account that supports passkeys. Look for an option such as “Create a passkey” or “Passwordless sign-in.” Follow the on-screen prompts, confirm that your device is protected with a screen lock, and check your recovery options. Start with an important account you use frequently, then add others as support becomes available.

The practical takeaway

Passkeys make everyday access easier while reducing exposure to common password attacks. The most sensible approach is gradual adoption: keep recovery information current, update your devices, and use passkeys wherever reputable services support them.
